And now the good news: Americans know where Spain is (please pass to the Spanish Embassy public diplomacy section in the USA), unreachable except by "leave your message" by phone

The some 30 entries on this granted very unscientific survey  -- "Americans Try To Place European Countries On A Map " --  identified Spain (unlike many of  the other European countries concerned) correctly, except for this entry (with no offense meant to Portugal from yours truly):


Could this unexpected American geographical expertise, despite the above erratum, be caused by the fact that, if one looks at a map, Spain is the "head" of Europe?  (Italy, its foot, did also quite well in USA-all-the way recognition).
